My Philly Treadmill Challenge 2019 Fundraising Page

Monika Serrano-Riedlinger

Back On My Feet and I go way back. I started running with a team in North Philly in 2009. When I moved to DC I was a team leader in Columbia Heights. Back On My Feet members are men and women who live in homeless shelters for an extended period of time. They commit to 3-4 runs per week as early as 5 am. Running teaches them discipline, persistence and shows them an ability they did not know they had - the ability to run distances, cross a 5K finish line, a 10K, a half marathon.. one member I knew completed a 100 miler. Back On My Feet assists members with job search, housing search and has literally put many homeless back on their feet.

As a volunteer, I learned how fortunate I am to have a roof over my head, food to eat, clothes to wear, a loving family, supportive friends. I learned that many people do not ever have the opportunity to have the life I have. Many people are born lacking basic needs and support. They may live in an environment of addictions and crime. They may live in a loving family that struggles to get food on the table let alone find time to make education a priority. They are rarely exposed to another environment. We cannot expect them to get up on their own, to defeat the odds on their own. We have to help them.

I am going to run 2 hours on June 5 as part of the Back On My Feet Philly Treadmill Challenge. Please make a contribution to my fundraiser. Every dollar I raise will advance Back on My Feet 's great cause!

Together, we can make a difference!

Happy Running!
