Back on My Feet is a national non-profit that helps save the lives of people experiencing homelessness and battling addiction right here in Atlanta. At the Salvation Army shelter (Team Sally) most of our teammates are veterans going through a substance abuse recovery program. It is an organization that combats homelessness through the power of running, community support and essential employment and housing resources. Homelessness isolates individuals from the norms of everyday life and leaves them distanced from the community support most people rely on daily. We meet as strangers, but something happens when you hug instead of shake hands, circle up to say the Serenity Prayer, and head out on a run together at 5:45am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It’s hard not to become fast friends, and it’s harder not to consider one another family as the days and weeks turn into months and years of friendship as we cheer each other on in races and in life!

In 5 years there, I’ve witnessed my teammates get their GED, finish a Bachelor’s degree, complete the training they need to land their dream job, and be reunited with their families. I’ve watched as my friends move out of the shelter and into apartments, and then come back to us as alumni. In short, I’ve witnessed enough miracles to know that I am willing to come to you to beg you to please donate!

This program works, but we need your help. On September 29th, Back On My Feet will host its 7th annual Meaningful Miles 5k. This is the only race that we host all year and the proceeds stay local. Dollars raised through your donation ensure that we can continue to help the homeless population get back on their feet-- literally and figuratively. Thank you.
